A Natural Base Solution.

For more than 30 years, Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC) have coordinate and implemented, projects throughout Tonga mostly in the nature of conservation and stewardship of the environment. TNYC for two years now started in 2022 have work with “KIWA Initiative” a Nature Based Solution project of conservations, marine and forest area.

The goal is the conservation of biodiversity      hot-spots that have been identified throughout Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Ha’apai and Vava’u and their unique ecosystem through effective resources conservation management efforts by local communities in each area utilizing nature-based solution as an adaptive response to targeted impact and threats of climate specific to each area.

“In Tongatapu we are targeting the Sopu reefs, for ‘Eua is the Lokupo Rainforest, Ha’apai is Foa Wetland  the “Ano Hehea” Conservation and for Vava’u Mo’ungalafa & Ngofe Wetland” said TNYC director “each island conservation area had a target plant species, birds and insects to be carefully monitored and restore or rejuvenate.

Youth Park Ranger’s have been established on all 4 projects site .  The rangers are responsible for the caring, maintenance, restoration, replanting, recording and documentation of plant species, birds , insect and other living organism and natural resources in the area.

The total expected beneficiary for this project  is estimated to be a total of 25090 people. Of this projected target population, it estimated that 51.5% are women and 48.5%  are men. It is estimated that the youth make up 31.8% of the total population across all project area (Census 2016). Based on these figures this project is projected to impact on a minimum 25% of the population of the Tonga. The total of household across all project sites is estimated at 4570 households.
