No Plastic Campaign

Climate Change” is one of the major root issues in the mind and attitude of people in the Pacific, with small Pacific Islands constantly affected by sea level rising, eroding away the shoreline and low-lying settlement area. Continuous increasing of heat surge, increasing frequency of cyclones and prolong period of drought.  “Climate Change” is the words ‘it is the life now of the Pacific and off course Tonga is no different with the Top 5 most vulnerable country to Climate Change List. Work on Climate Resilience to Youth and Community increase to better prepare youth to deal with this on a daily basis.  Tonga National Youth Congress have work on the 1 million tree campaign since 2017 running coincide with the “No Plastic campaign

In 2022 Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC) launch the 1 Million Trees project of the Department of Environment and Climate Change and NGO Tonga Citizens Science Initiative.

“It is our duty and privilege to help and support the Climate Change unit to plant these 1 million trees” said TNYC Environmental coordinator “there is a saying in our islands ‘The reef today is the land of tomorrow’.

In August TNYC started with planting 6000 mangrove in “ Sopu Reef Project Site”.  This site is  a conservation area that TNYC is currently implementing Kiwa Initiative Project call the “Youth Nature-based Adaptation Project. This project focus on  reef rehabilitation starting with restoration of fish habitats by planting mangrove in the area.

Youth in Sopu Area and the coastal line area of Hihifo are very much involves with the conservation project as well as supporting Tonga 1 million tree campaign for 2025.
