The Messenger :- Alcohol Awareness 2017

Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC) with Tonga Health, Tonga Police and Salvation Army have put a lot of effort on the Alcohol awareness campaign during the holiday season beginning December 2016 – January 2017. Last Week TNYC have call together the training team for a two-day refresher course and plan for the continuation of the awareness program to 8 more villages.

“The social impact of alcohol is countless not to mention it health related issue on the body” said Project Team Leader Mausa Halahala the next phase of our plan for this project is that we will also work with volleyball team in villages and visiting volleyball tournament. With this tournament we will have the chance to form up a capacity building for youth who are involved in sport to advocate on alcohol related harms and responsible healthy behavior.”

From October to December 2016 TNYC alcohol awareness team reach out to three villages last year this year they are planning to take their alcohol awareness messages to eight more villages. “We have our work cut out for us” said Mausa Halahala “By April 2017 we will deliver our message to eight more villages, but that is not the end. We are looking to expand our message so it may reach out to more villages, schools, NGO’s and so on”

One of the great value of this project is that TNYC isn’t the only organization with Tonga Health in this task but Tonga Police Force is in the team and also Salvation Army “the great value of our team is that we each have our area of expertise” said TNYC Project Team Leader “The Salvation Army work with their youth and client who have been in alcohol rehabilitation center. The Police Force enforce the law of alcohol and carry out their own awareness through the media. Where we in TNYC we go out to the community and spread the message to young and old. So yes we have a broad that i going out with the one gold to reduce the impact of alcohol consumption in our great island kingdom”.
